His 25 year practitioner career includes marketing roles with the Universal Oil Products Company (UOP Inc.) in Chicago, USA, Esso Petroleum in Oslo, Norway, and a career in advertising with the J. Walter Thompson (JWT) advertising agency in the UK, Canada and Japan concluding as President/CEO of JWT Japan and Executive Vice President and a Board Director of the worldwide company.
His 24 year academic career includes teaching at the Rutgers Graduate School of Business in the US, leading business schools in Argentina, China, India, Russia and Thailand, and currently the marketing faculty at the Schulich School of Business. In 2001 he took over as Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre which runs non-degree programs for over 10,000 executives and managers a year domestically and internationally.
Alan co-authored the books “Advertising Works II”, and “Ikonica – A Fieldguide to Canada’s Brandscape”, and has numerous papers and book chapters published
He is a co-founder of the ‘Cassie’ advertising awards, is a member of the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends , a holder of the ACA Gold Medal for contribution to the marketing industry, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to the literacy movement, and International Association of Business Communicators Toronto Communicator of the Year award.
He is actively involved with Boards and Board Committees for ABC Life Literacy, AIESEC-Canada, AMA Mentor Exchange and Marketing Hall of Legends, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership, Product of the Year Awards, ROM, Sunnybrook Health Sciences, Toronto Financial Services Alliance and the Marketing Committee of Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.
